Life on the Ganges, Varanasi, India

Varanasi, also known as Benares, is the most sacred city in Hinduism and played an important role in the development of Buddhism. Located on the holy River Ganga (Ganges) it is famous for its many ghats (riverfront steps) which stretch for about 2km along the banks of the river and are a hub of activity and spiritual rituals.

Every evening on the ghats, the Ganga Aarti ceremony is performed, offering prayers and light to the Goddess Ganga. The ceremony is visually very striking and involves synchronized movements with brass lamps, fire, chanting, and the waving of incense, creating a spiritual atmosphere.
